Scammers are creating clever and convincing fake jobs to trick people, and it’s more important than ever to know how to spot them.

The 5 Common Scams
Scam #1: The Unbelievable Data Entry Job Scam
This is one of the most common scams, but the promises are becoming more unbelievable. Here’s a real offer I personally received: a company offered me $2200 (that’s over ₹1,80,000!) just to write 50 simple pages.
My first thought was, “Why would anyone pay this much for such easy work?” This is your most important warning sign: if the money seems too good to be true, it’s a scam.
The trap is simple. They get you excited about the huge fake payment. After you do the work, they hit you with the catch: you must pay a fee for things like “registration,” a “security deposit,” or “software.” Once you pay, they disappear, and you never see your money or the promised salary.
Scam #2: The Fake “Urgent Project” on SMS
This scam is clever because it targets you directly, using your real name and skills. I received this exact SMS a while ago:
“Hello Rajkumar Sahu, I need the help of an Excel specialist to professionally format and clean a dataset for my business. Your expertise in data cleaning, removing duplicates, and fixing layouts is precisely the service I require. All the details… are provided at this link…”
It looks completely real, right? But the link didn’t lead to project details. It led to a payment page where they requested me to pay them for “project access.” A real client will never ask you to pay them to start working.
Scam #3: The WhatsApp “Like & Subscribe” Scam
You’ve probably seen this whatsapp job scam. A stranger offers easy money (₹50-₹150) for liking a YouTube video. They might even pay you the small amount to gain your trust. Then, they invite you to a Telegram group and ask you to pay a larger amount (₹2,000+) for a “premium membership” to get high-paying tasks. As soon as you pay, they block you.
Scam #4: The “Financial Freedom” Digital Product Scam
This scam is all over LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. Someone with a flashy profile promises to help you “achieve financial freedom” and invites you to a webinar. At the end of the high-energy sales pitch, you’re told to buy an expensive digital course (₹5,000+) to join their team. The real “job” is not to learn, but to recruit your own friends to buy the same course. It’s a pyramid scheme.
Scam #5: The Post-Interview “Hidden Fee” Scam
This one feels the most real, and I had a very convincing experience with this myself. I was interviewed for a “District Coordinator” role, supposedly from the company Himalaya. The interview went well, but at the very end, they said I had to purchase a ₹2 lakh insurance plan to get the job. This is a huge red flag. A real company never asks a candidate to pay for their own job.
What to Do if You Think You’ve Been Scammed
Realizing you’ve been scammed can be stressful, but it’s important to act fast.
Step 1: Stop All Communication. Immediately block the scammer’s phone number, WhatsApp, and email address. Do not engage with them any further.
Step 2: Contact Your Bank. If you sent money, call your bank’s fraud department immediately. Report the transaction and explain what happened.
Step 3: Report it to the Authorities. You are not alone, and reporting helps everyone. File a complaint on the official Indian Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
My Personal Checklist: How I Identify Fake Job Offers
After seeing so many online job scams in India, I’ve developed this simple checklist.
Rule #1: They Ask for Money. I stop the conversation immediately. Real companies pay you; you never, ever pay them.
Rule #2: The Money is Unrealistic. I ask myself, “Does this make business sense?” No real company pays ₹1,80,000 for simple typing.
Rule #3: They Seem Unprofessional. Look for spelling mistakes, messages from personal WhatsApp numbers for a big company job, or generic Gmail addresses.
